Personal style has to do with expressing your unique individuality through wearing garments and accessories that excite you, feel good, look good, and reflect your personality and vibe. Personal style has the power create a narrative, a story about who you are inside and out.
When we were attending high school we wanted to fit in, to be accepted and included. We would dress according to whatever group we identified with. It could be the fashionistas, the jocks, the goths, the punks, the hipsters. When we wore the "costume" of the group we wanted to be part of it gave us a sense of belonging and boosted our self esteem.
When we go to work we dress the part - reflecting the role or position we have been hired for. Many of us wear a "uniform" to position ourselves in the hierarchy of the organization or company we work for.
I'm not referring to that kind of style.
I'm talking about making a statement and standing out in the crowd and being memorable. I'm talking about not fitting in. One way of doing this is by wearing a 'signature" piece. It could be a fabulous jacket with unique details and unusual fabric. It could be a wild crazy pair of glasses or funky 'over the top' footwear. It could be a stunning piece of artwear jewellery and when you wear it you feel transformed, empowered, and confident. This is the kind of style I mean - Personal Style.
Below are 2 examples of signature artwear pieces, a period piece opera coat, and a funky patina copper & suede bag that help define my personal style. I created these back in the day....
